Active Listening Skills

Lesson 1

• Examine various levels of listening and how to listen at level 3

• Identify the elements of effective and active listening; making eye contact, focusing on the speaker, checking for understanding, being nonjudgmental, and asking clarifying questions.,

• Learn to listen and respond based on a person’s personality style and patterns of interaction

• Ask short power questions, repeat or summarize what you heard, and respond to the speaker supportively

Lesson 2

• Determine interferences with listening effectively and critique the negative habits of listening and the 6 styles of negative listening types.

• Practice skills and the effective tools that comprise the Listening Cycle

Lesson 3

• Understand how to use the GROW model to be an effective listener

• Practice the various stages of GROW by simulating different situations and discussing challenges
